Hydrogen Peroxide

Postby klarason » Wed Feb 24, 2010 12:24 pm

When we had the ice storm we saved our fish by dosing the tank with 1 tsp of h202 per 50 gallons every 6 hours.

Most everything lived.

However I had a tank of baby cichlids that all perished and I don't know why.

Does anyone know what the ramifications of the H202 would be in a tank? Some other people from here, that were also affected by the ice storm were wondering about this...

BTW I really don't like ice storms! That was NOT fun.

H2O2 is a strong oxidizer and it hits fry pretty hard. I used it once in one of my tanks where I had 1 month old fry and it wiped them out. At that dose, I don't thing it should have affected your fish, but you never know with peroxide. Did you have an airpump or other type of circulation going at the time? Depending on the flow, it might have something to do with the rate of breakdown of peroxide to oxygen and water. In the peroxide form, it's more toxic. With a faster rate of breakdown with increased circulation, you'll get more oxygen and water which is safer. Don't know for sure though...

Well during the power outage we didn't have any air pumps since there was no power. That's why we used the hydrogen peroxide. The 2 fry I have left seem to be recovering.
